Safety is a major issue in the non-ending work of engineering our world. As we go about our daily duties both at work and outside work, the slogan ”Safety First” is a practice which should be well etched at the fore of our minds. It is required of us to put safety at the very core of our work patterns. A most recent report by the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), culled from Thisday Nigeria, indicates a number of accidents with fatalities inclusive of both employees and non-employees from the 11 electricity distribution companies of the country.

While it is commendable that safety improvements from implementing safety technologies, procedures, policies, and programs are increasingly recorded across the industry, yet there remains a lot of work to do in many engineering workplaces to transform safety behaviors and attitudes. It is therefore pertinent to note that continuous focus should be directed to our safety while in/out of the work environment.

Recommendations from several safety regulatory bodies and independents have pushed for awareness in our approach to safety while executing work in highly hazardous workplaces. Safety policies, meetings, training, controls and procedures should be imbibed by all staff and extended to the public to minimize accidents in/out of the workplace and also reduce fatalities. Employees should consistently be reminded of a “get home safe” mentality so as to re-unite with family & friends daily.
